Buy Me Kraftwerk's Prototype Vocoder

kraftwerk.jpg
Musicthing pointed out this awesome eBay auction.

"The mother of all transistorized vocoders, prototype of early 70´s custom built for german electronic duo of that period:

documented by back cover photo of KW's album "Ralf & Florian" and in some part in the artwork on inside sleeve.

The device was used for two studio productions, title "Ananas Symphonie" including synthetic vocals and rhythm track in conjunction with lapsteel guitar and rhythm machine , as well for "Kristallo" with rhythm machine and EMS-Synth.

Later used to sound the KW's intro for "Autobahn"

The vocoder contains 12 analysis and synthesis filter channels, 2 compressors for speech or carrier signal and excitation signal inputs, voiced /unvoiced detector and switch board for filter-matrix.

It was conceived , built and constructed by electronic engineers in the area of Physikalisch-Technische BundesAnstalt (PTB) Braunschweig, Dipl.Ing P.Leunig and Dipl.Ing. K.Obermayer.

Later the well known german music studio engineering and supplier company R.Barth K.G.,Hamburg, Germany, boiled down the know-how gained from this project into so called MUSICODER which was produced in small quantities. "

A great peice of music history. Damn I want it!

Wikimapia

wikimapia.jpg
Wikimapia (WARNING: CRASHES SAFARI) is a really cool Google Maps mash-up. In true wiki fashion, anyone who wants can select/create/edit points of interest anywhere on the planet. It sounds kind of simple, but it's hours of entertainment.

Name This Schmuck

givename.jpg
Aaron Schwarz (one of the people behind TShirthell.com) wants a new name. Not only does he want you to pick it, he will pay you $25,000 for it!

"My name is Aaron Schwarz and I've decided to change my name. I figured, rather than dealing with the boredom of researching mythological deities or wasting my precious time looking through popular books of names, I would just get the entire population of the world to do the job for me. Oh yeah, I'm going to give $25,000 to whoever suggests the best name."

Why are you still here? You should be suggesting a name!

Backlit Keyboard Disco

If your like me, your easily entertained by blinking lights, and semi-obsessed with iTunes visuals.
Well some guy named Stefan is too, so he wrote an iTunes plug-in that makes your backlit keyboard react to the music.

Backlight Visualizer for iTunes on MacOS X After seeing info on hacking the keyboard backlight of newer Apple portables and someone posting a CPU meter using the backlight, I decided that it would be time to put this into an iTunes plugin.

new and improved: now it can optionally blink the screen's backlight! Use at your own risk.

Try it out.

Visor

fetch.png
Visor is a cool little OS X app that gives you a drop down terminal ala Quake.

Visor provides a systemwide terminal window accessible via a hotkey, much like the consoles found in games such as Quake. Visor requires elements of Quartz only found in 10.4. Visor is compatible with 10.4 and higher only.

If you use the terminal often, this is indispensable. Not only does it take on whatever color scheme you have set for your terminal, it supports Quartz animations in the background. You really have to try it to see how cool it is.

Amen Brother

Most people have no idea that 6 seconds of drumming from a 1969 B-side is the foundation for almost all modern Jungle and Drum & Bass music. Used in literally thousands of songs, from hip hop to electronica, and even in commercials, the drum break from The Winston's Amen Brother is the single most used sample of all time.

Sure the video is kind of long (at 18+ minutes) and all you ever see is a turntable, but it's quite informative for those who dont know the story. Once it's been pointed out, you will hear sample's of this song everywhere.

The Bay is Back!

hollybay.jpg

Less than a week after the Sweeds raided their servers under US pressure, The Pirate Bay is back and serving torrents! The servers are now in the Netherlands. I expect this is just the biginning of the war. This should get very interesting.

And in true TPB fashion they have posted some interesting stats:

Just some stats...

... here are some reasons why TPB is down sometimes - and how long it usually takes to fix:

Tiamo gets *very* drunk and then something crashes: 4 days

Anakata gets a really bad cold and noone is around: 7 days

The US and Swedish gov. forces the police to steal our servers: 3 days

.. yawn.
