Death by Caffeine

Death by Caffeine is exactly what it sounds like. You pick the caffeinated beverage, it gives you an estimate on how many it will take to end your sad little existence.

"It would take 120.63 cups of Brewed Coffee to put you down."

The Bay is Back!

hollybay.jpg

Less than a week after the Sweeds raided their servers under US pressure, The Pirate Bay is back and serving torrents! The servers are now in the Netherlands. I expect this is just the biginning of the war. This should get very interesting.

And in true TPB fashion they have posted some interesting stats:

Just some stats...

... here are some reasons why TPB is down sometimes - and how long it usually takes to fix:

Tiamo gets *very* drunk and then something crashes: 4 days

Anakata gets a really bad cold and noone is around: 7 days

The US and Swedish gov. forces the police to steal our servers: 3 days

.. yawn.

F Off Macrovision

MTR.jpg

Macrovision has a long history of being evil toward consumers in the name of copy-protection. Their half-assed attempts at DRM have always had flaws and rather than come up with something better they have decided to go after the little guys.

VersionTracker.com is reporting that Macrovision is demanding they stop linking to MacTheRipper.

"We have been contacted by Macrovision, who claims this violates their property and are threatening to sue us if we don't remove the links to it. We are checking with our legal advisors to find out what our options are. -VersionTracker Editors"

The best way to get your copy of MacTheRipper at the moment is via BitTorrent.

KROQ Starts Streaming, Still Screws it Up

kroq.gif

After years and years of refusing, Los Angeles based KROQ has finally started streaming their content online. But as always, the still managed to screw it up. Not only is the stream based in Windows Media and super low quality (54 kbps), but the site is so badly designed it does not work on anything except windows. After trying the site in every browser I could (Safari, Shiira, Opera, Firefox, ect. ect.) I gave up and found the stream's url in the source.

UPDATE - 2/22/05
Looks like they have changed URL's:

Drop that URL into Windows Media Player for mac and you too can hear The Kevin & Bean Show.

Hunter S. Thompson Commits Suicide

pounhunter.jpg

The pioneer of "Gonzo Journalism" Hunter S. Thompson killed himself yesterday

"Thompson was found dead Sunday in his Aspen-area home of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, sheriff's officials said. He was 67. Thompson's wife, Anita, had gone out before the shooting and was not home at the time. His son, Juan, found the body.
Thompson "took his life with a gunshot to the head," the wife and son said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News. The statement asked for privacy for Thompson's family and, using the Latin term for Earth, added, "He stomped terra.""

JewelCase

jewelcase.jpg

I have always been disappointed with the lack of good visual plug-in's for iTunes. Sure there's G-Force, but compared to WinAmp and some of the other Windows MP3 players we don’t have squat. That’s why I was ecstatic to find JewelCase. JewelCase renders a spinning 3D CD jewelcase of whatever your listening to. If the song has album art, it is used as the cover and altered for the back cover.
And JewelCase renders a track listing of all the other songs on the album (that you have, and have properly tagged) on the back.

"JewelCase is a plug-in that turns iTunes into a visual jukebox, displaying each song in a virtual CD jewel case, complete with album cover art, artist and album information... It's just like viewing real CDs in your collection!"

Simple, elegant, and free. Just like your mom.

"Welcome to the Macintosh Garden, a site devoted to preserving Macintosh abandonware games.

Abandonware is commercial software that has been discontinued by the publisher and are not sold or supported anymore. If you are the publisher of a certain game on this site, and wish that it is removed, please email me and I will remove the game.

The interest for abandonware is increasing everyday. One reason is that the emulators keep getting better and there are quite a few great emulators that runs the MacOS. Another reason is that people realize that all these new "cool" 3D games already have been made. And usually the original is more fun to play. :)"

"American Dad from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, is the animated story of Stan Smith (MacFarlane), who works for the CIA and is constantly on the alert for terrorist activity.

Stan will go to extremes to protect his beloved America from harm – as evidenced by the terror-alert color code on his fridge, and his frequent knee-jerk reaction of shooting holes in the toaster whenever the toast pops up."

It's getting a bit old and tired now, the engine has been welded back together quite a few times and is currently in need of further repairs (that I will make before selling). Over the years, many tools have appeared to handle such files, unfortunately the majority have been PC-based, thus leaving Mac users in the dust. Gumby tried to rectify this situation by providing roughly 20 programs into a single application.

VCD Jelly: Extracts an mpeg-1 film from a file.
SVCD Jelly: Same thing as above but for Mpeg-2 files.
SVCD Fixer: Fixes SVCD's so they work on some players.
Binchunker: Converts a binary file (.bin) to an ISO.
SFV Checker: Performs checksum verification on files.
PS2 Patcher: Patches PS2 images (CD or DVD) for the Japanese swap trick.
PPF Patcher: Applies PPF patches to images.
MPEG Cutter: Cuts or trims MPEG documents.
Unrar Extractor: Extracts files from RAR documents.
PAR Checker: Fixes RAR documents using parity files (PAR).
PS2 PAL: Converts PAL PS2 games so they run on NTSC TV sets.
GI to ISO: Converts Primo DVD images to standard ISO.
S/VCD Builder: Creates VCD or SVCD images from mpeg documents.
MPEG Fixer: Demuxes, Remuxes, Fixes and Repairs MPEG files.
Batch Processor: Automates multiples functions to work with 1 click."

Your Mac is a HDTV PVR

This excellent MacOSXHints.com article explains in detail how to use your firewire equipped mac to record HDTV signals at full resolution for free. All that is needed is a HDTV cable box with FireWire (Since April 1st the FCC requires your Cable company to offer you one), a mac with firewire, NinjaMonkey, and tons of hard drive space. The only downsides are some HDTV signals are encrypted (unplayable), the files can only be played back in VLC, and video at 1920x1080 and 1280x720 (1080i and 720p) takes up huge amounts of drive space.

OMFG!!!!!!

family_guy.gif

In what is absolutely the most important news of all time, Seth MacFarlane, creator of The Family Guy, has announced that The Family Guy is returning to television with new episodes!!!!!!!!!!!!

"MacFarlane told IGN.com that he plans to begin production on new installments in April, but is unsure about whether the episodes will first air on Fox, which originally broadcast the series from 1999-2002, or the Cartoon Network, which has aired the show in repeats since April 2003.

"Cartoon Network will be involved regardless," MacFarlane told IGN.com. "Whether it goes there permanently or winds up on Fox first and then Cartoon Network remains to be seen. So, at the very least it will be on Cartoon Network, which is great, because at the end of the day, that's where we built our biggest fan base. So I'm happy either way."

Last.fm is a really cool personalized music streaming service that my explanations can't do justice so here is the blurb from their site:

"Last.fm creates a radio station unique to each listener. Stations are not limited by programming schedules or musical genres, but are compiled by a profiling and recommendation system which compares your musical taste with other listeners.

Last.fm Radio tries to do three things for you: Firstly the Last.fm system learns about your musical taste by remembering which songs you listen to and which you skip. Last.fm then uses this knowledge and tries to play you more songs you'll like, too. If you become a fairly regular Last.fm listener, the system should know you well enough to be able to predict new songs you like."

A post on theInside Mac Games Forums gives us an update on the status of Descent: Freespace 1 & 2 for Mac OS X. Mainly it says music/voices and fullscreen don't work but movies do. 3D audio and force-feedback are on the way. This is cool but what about Descent 3? My absolute favorite in the series and it has internet multiplayer. Too bad Scott never got off his lazy ass and finished GameRanger Support for it.

Labock Tech have developed the utimate in Cap Peeling technology, one way bulletproof glass! One side stops bullets, the other side allows them to pass through, then the glass heals itself. You So Krazy

Corey managed to get Krazy Glue in his eye! From the story:"As a side note, I'd like to say that wet Krazy Glue in the eye hurts like a motherf*#@%r. More on that later.". Sure, he is a dumbass for doing it, but you have got to respect that he told the world!

Hack Your Mac...

This Security detail shows a simple way to defeat Mac OS x's(10.2) ScreenSaver Password protection. Panther (Mac OS X 10.3) adds password protection when waking from sleep but I don't know if that feature is vulnerable as well.

Rotten Core

CoreCrib (mentioned here and here), the company Repackaging/Reselling old Apple logic boards in new cases, is no longer in business. Just as I said, Apple came down on their parts supplier, Small Dog, since Apple Authorized repair facilities are not allowed to resell parts, especially not to another company who isn't in any way Apple authorized.

From their site:
" The Bad News: Our distributor was under contract to not sell the Apple components we reply on for our business. The supplier was unaware of the stipulation when we originally started our business agreements. Now that the facts are clear, they are under legal pressure to stop immediately and perminately the sales of Apple components to CoreComputers.

The Good News: We are actively searching for new suppliers which are not under agreements that restrict the sales and have a very good lead that may provide short term and long term supplies for current orders and new orders of both the CoreCrib and the CoreBox. "

European Commercials Rule

Corey Tamas has found one of the funniest TV ad's I have ever seen. You would never see this on American TV (after all it wasn't on the BBC 2 years ago), and there isnt even any nudity. You might want to turn your speakers down though.

RTFM

I have been playing The Getaway for about two weeks now, and just passed the mansion with the lasers. "Why haven't you finished it?" you ask? Cause I DIDN'T READ THE FUCKING MANUAL. The game has no "training" mode or level so I just jumped in and figured it out by playing. I can't remember any time in my gaming history (easily 400 games) that I have missed out on MAJOR features of game-play due to not reading the manual, but now it's happened.

It turns out there is an Auto-Aim that is meant to be the primary attack but only works when enemies are around, so when you hide in an empty room to learn the controls, it does nothing so you assume it's unused.

And this one bothers me a lot. The game has no health or ammo gauges, and no health to pickup anywhere. I assumed that this meant there was no healing, boy was I wrong. Apparently leaning against walls heals you. Yes, LEANING heals you! WHAT THE FUCK!@#$% I want those magical morphine walls in my new condo!

Speaking of the condo, I get my keys on monday. I am so god damn excited I can't believe it. My first home, it's a ton of responsibility but will absolutely change my life for the better. I still have no roommate and can't afford to be without one. I put an ad in the Loyola-Marymount student paper since it's walking distance to the campus but only got 3 phone calls. First one didn't return my calls. Second forgot to leave his phone number in the message and didn't show up on my caller ID. Number 3 only wanted a summer place, and I don't want to go through this again in 3 months. Also I still haven't figured out hosting, I absolutely cannot get a static IP in the new place and cannot afford any kind of hosting. A few people have emailed me links to their favorite hosts (thanks) but I still cant swing it. Fear not, my dear readers, CapsGetPeeled will never die. The power of the Westside compels it.

Audioscrobbler.com Returns

Everyone using iScrobbler may have noticed over the last 2 weeks that AudioScrobbler.com has been shaky at best, and even gone for a while. It has returned and even has working recommendations once you have submitted 500 songs. Here is my stats because I like to pretend you care. If you don't know about AudioScrobbler, it works with your music player to compare what you listen to with what other Audioscrobbler users are listening to and makes recomendations based on this data.

Holy new software updates batman!

Apple brings the Duece-Duece
First they give us a new Safari , and then Mac OS X 10.2.4. Stupid update moves and replaces your httpd.conf (Apache Config). If they can write an OS I don't see why they cant figure how to add a line to an existing text file.

Movable Type hits 2.6
The software that runs this blog (and like a million others) MovableType has been updated to version 2.6. There is also a Pro version ($) that might be useful to blogs that actually have readers (unlike here). I have updated this site to the new version, and to my amazement (and I'm sure yours as well) I don't think I screwed anything up. If you find any broken links or errors please let me know.

Kismac 0.03c
Everyones favorite wireless scanner Kismac has gotten a big update.
