Inside Banksy's Barely Legal

DSC09246-1.jpg
DSC09337.jpg

The british artist Banksy had a show in downtown LA this last weekend called Barely Legal. While it is getting a lot of press (at least locally), it's mostly dirty PETA hippies complaining that there's an elephant with paint on it. Luckily for those of us who couldn't make it to the show Supertouch has posted some photo's. Rumor has it that every piece sold opening night, and none of them for less than $100,000!

Visor

fetch.png
Visor is a cool little OS X app that gives you a drop down terminal ala Quake.

Visor provides a systemwide terminal window accessible via a hotkey, much like the consoles found in games such as Quake. Visor requires elements of Quartz only found in 10.4. Visor is compatible with 10.4 and higher only.

If you use the terminal often, this is indispensable. Not only does it take on whatever color scheme you have set for your terminal, it supports Quartz animations in the background. You really have to try it to see how cool it is.

Amen Brother

Most people have no idea that 6 seconds of drumming from a 1969 B-side is the foundation for almost all modern Jungle and Drum & Bass music. Used in literally thousands of songs, from hip hop to electronica, and even in commercials, the drum break from The Winston's Amen Brother is the single most used sample of all time.

Sure the video is kind of long (at 18+ minutes) and all you ever see is a turntable, but it's quite informative for those who dont know the story. Once it's been pointed out, you will hear sample's of this song everywhere.

419er Gets What He Deserves

132305.jpg
This guy was selling a nice video camera used on Amazon and was being pestered by Nigerian 419 scammers. When they went to the extreme of faking Amazon purchase conformations he decided to get revenge. Instead of getting a Cannon GL2 in his scamming little hands, this Nigerian recieved a box of feces, and had to pay the FedEx bill to boot.

"A day or so after listing the GL2 I started receiving emails from interested parties. I was immediately suspicious when I received multiple inquiries wanting to pay for the GL2 via Bidpay and requesting that I ship the Canon GL2 to Nigeria. Each time I responded that the Canon GL2 had to be purchased via the amazon.com purchasing system and that I could ship the GL2 to Nigeria. I also would inform the prospective buyer that I would ship the GL2 as soon as I received confirmation from amazon.com confirming the sale of the GL2. Soon after responding I would receive another email  that looked as if it originated from amazon.com, I believe this is called phishing, stating that my camera had been sold and to ship it to some person in Nigeria. Whenever I receive a sale confirmation email from amazon.com I log into my account at amazon.com to verify the legitimacy of the email and each time the camera was still listed as not sold and there was not any money transfered into my amazon.com account. At this point I was certain that the confirmation emails from amazon.com were fraudulent and I was being scammed."

The above photo is from the always excellent 419Eater.

TivoToGo for Mac NOT Vaporware!

Long promised but never delivered, Tivo is showing early test versions of TivoToGo for Mac OS X at CES. TivoToGo lets you download recordings from Tivo Series 2 and presumably the newly annouced series 3 to your Mac and from there move it to other media devices. Burn a DVD, put it on your PSP, or watch it on your iPod Video. The question is: "How long till this shows up on BitTorrent?"

Kazakhstan Looses Sense of Humor

Kazakhstan doesnt like Ali G, damn commies.

"Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry threatened legal action on Monday against comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, who wins laughs by portraying the central Asian state as a country populated by drunks who enjoy cow-punching as a sport.

Baron Cohen, who portrays a spoof Kazakh television presenter Borat in his "Da Ali G Show", has won fame ridiculing Kazakhstan, the world's ninth largest country yet still little known to many in the West."

Beer Container Protocol

So I've been drinking (which I do a lot) and thinking (which I don't do nearly enough) and came up with something amazingly brilliant. But then I forgot it and scribbled down this instead. Like most of the women I sleep with, I am sure I'll regret this tomorrow.

Beer Container Protocol

Keg - Always the preferred container for Gods Gift. The man with a keg controls all. They can even be mobilized thanks to dollies and indentured servants. Bringing your keg out in public will attract moochers nine times out of ten, so be sure to bring lots of bear repellant.

Pitcher - If above mentioned indentured servant is otherwise occupied then this is your next best choice. Don't want to share your pitcher? Damn right you don't, and by drinking directly from the pitcher, no one but the drunkest slob will want to share your Saliva Pale Ale.

Pint Glass - Simple, elegant, and always there for you (unlike your girlfriend, who's always there for ME). In the Beer Protocol, the Pint Glass comes third.

Glass Bottle - Hey at least it's not a can!

Yard Glass - Frat boy novelty. If there's good beer in it, the second foot and a half will be warm and flat by the time you reach it. If there's bad beer in it, then I hope you trip and cut yourself on a yard of glass you schmuck

Beer Hat - Makes up for the use of cans by being considered formal-wear in Kentucky. Two beers at a time means you can get funk draster!

Beer Bong - That sixer of Naughty Ice that some loser brought over isn't gonna drink itself. MGD, Bud, PBR, or any other beer that is only valuable for the liquor content can quickly drown your troubles via a large funnel and 3 feet of smelly rubber tubing from Home Depot.

Beer Can - Consider this simply a momentary container before filling your beer bong. Canned beer tastes bad, is not a usable weapon, and despite what your gay uncle told you, it will not make you forget that time he touched your no-no spot.

Plastic Beer Bottle - What good is a beer container if you can hurt a Major League Baseball player with it?

Beer Goggles - Not a Beer container but something everyone should always be wary of. If she's talking to you and not trying to steal your wallet, then she's ugly.

Someone at the BBC is smoking a little too much ganja.

"BBC Three, one of the public broadcaster's digital TV channels, sent an e-mail to the Bob Marley Foundation saying it wanted to do a documentary about his hit song "No Woman No Cry".

It said the project would involve Marley -- who died of cancer in May 1981 at the age of 36 -- "spending one or two days with us", and that "it would only work with some participation from Bob Marley himself". "

Wow.

iGetMovies

t659iGetMovies.jpg

One of my biggest pet-peeves on the internet is movies or trailers that are view only, and don't let you save them to your drive. There are almost always ways to trick your browser into downloading them, but they take a lot more effort than some cheesy trailer is usually worth. Enter iGetMovies (warning: french website). A free application made in Applescript studio, it copies the movie from quicktime's cache and saves it as a viewable quicktime movie on your desktop. This works for any quicktime movie in Safari or on the iTunes store.

Bless Your iPod

om-mani-padma-hum.gif

"Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying the mantra (prayer) Om Mani Padme Hum, invites the blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion."

Bare with us here, there is a point!

"They also believe you can produce the same effect by spinning the written form of the mantra around in a prayer wheel (called "Mani wheels" by the Tibetans). The effect is said to be multiplied when more copies of the mantra are included, and spinning the Mani wheels faster increases the benefit as well."

Remember "Giiiive me the kniiife" from Eddie Murphy's The Golden Child?

"His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, has said that having the mantra on your computer works the same as a traditional Mani wheel. As the digital image spins around on your hard drive, it sends the peaceful prayer of compassion to all directions and purifies the area."

So just by downloading the above image to your iPod (or hard drive) you can bless it, and all that surrounds it.

All the Buddhist stuff in quotes came from here. Yes, this was sort-of mentioned on slashdot ages ago, but putting it on your iPod is my “spin” on things.

"Ballistix Tracer memory features two rows of eight "chasing" red and green LEDs atop the module, indicating memory activity by circulating at varying speeds. A custom-designed circuit relays bus activity to the LEDs, allowing them to accurately reflect usage of each memory module. In addition, eight blue ground effects LEDs emit a constant glow near the pins. "

* A Pocket PC (any Pocket PC 2002 / 2003 should work, we used a Toshiba and an iPaq)

Apple's G5 Liquid Cooling System

g5lcs1small.gif

Apple Insider has published detailed illustrations of the liquid cooling system used in Apple's new G5. It looks very similar to the liquid cooling system developed by MIT students (who were sponsored by Apple) if you ask me. Keep in mind this entire system is enclosed in the heatsink.

I cant help but wonder how long untill someone tries to open their heatsink and destroys their new G5. Or some tech at CompUSA who cant even spell Macintosh wants to change out someones radiator fluid for them, only after Pep-Boys refills their car's blinker fluid of course.

"1. G5 processor at point of contact to the heatsink.
2. G5 processor card from IBM
3. Heatsink (also referred to as a 'waterblock')
4. Cooling fluid output from the radiator to the pump
5. Liquid cooling system pump
6. Pump power cable (usually connected to the main logic board, but repositioned in the above diagram)
7. Cooling fluid radiator input from the G5 processor
8. Radiant grille
9. Airflow direction "

Aquaduct 2.0b1

A few days ago we mentioned Xlink Kia was coming to the Mac but they still haven’t given a release date (they also refuse to even confirm that it's being worked on in their forums).
Thanks to Aquaduct 2 we dont really have to care:

"* The power to play some Xbox Halo online. Lots and lots of Halo. And 45+ other System Link games too.
* The ability to register an XBConnect Tag and log in to the XBConnect server, where you'll find lots of Windows users who also want to play some Halo. You can use an existing Tag if you have one.
* An Aqua-beautiful browser to list games. Lots and lots of games.
* Live sorting and searching tools to manipulate the games list. 'Cause it's so full.
* A little yellow Connect button, to join in on those games.
* A chat interface, for both the XBConnect chat rooms and your own Aquaduct channel.
* A slightly buggy buddy list to help organize your posse.
* A mostly-complete step-by-step guide to using Aquaduct.
* Stuff I have forgotten Aquaduct does. "

Hosting doesn’t work yet and I wouldn’t try it over an airport network quite yet. But it works extremely well, especially for a beta.
