Inside Banksy's Barely Legal

DSC09246-1.jpg

The british artist Banksy had a show in downtown LA this last weekend called Barely Legal. While it is getting a lot of press (at least locally), it's mostly dirty PETA hippies complaining that there's an elephant with paint on it. Luckily for those of us who couldn't make it to the show Supertouch has posted some photo's. Rumor has it that every piece sold opening night, and none of them for less than $100,000!

Visor

fetch.png
Visor is a cool little OS X app that gives you a drop down terminal ala Quake.

Visor provides a systemwide terminal window accessible via a hotkey, much like the consoles found in games such as Quake. Visor requires elements of Quartz only found in 10.4. Visor is compatible with 10.4 and higher only.

If you use the terminal often, this is indispensable. Not only does it take on whatever color scheme you have set for your terminal, it supports Quartz animations in the background. You really have to try it to see how cool it is.

Amen Brother

Most people have no idea that 6 seconds of drumming from a 1969 B-side is the foundation for almost all modern Jungle and Drum & Bass music. Used in literally thousands of songs, from hip hop to electronica, and even in commercials, the drum break from The Winston's Amen Brother is the single most used sample of all time.

Sure the video is kind of long (at 18+ minutes) and all you ever see is a turntable, but it's quite informative for those who dont know the story. Once it's been pointed out, you will hear sample's of this song everywhere.

419er Gets What He Deserves

132305.jpg
This guy was selling a nice video camera used on Amazon and was being pestered by Nigerian 419 scammers. When they went to the extreme of faking Amazon purchase conformations he decided to get revenge. Instead of getting a Cannon GL2 in his scamming little hands, this Nigerian recieved a box of feces, and had to pay the FedEx bill to boot.

"A day or so after listing the GL2 I started receiving emails from interested parties. I was immediately suspicious when I received multiple inquiries wanting to pay for the GL2 via Bidpay and requesting that I ship the Canon GL2 to Nigeria. Each time I responded that the Canon GL2 had to be purchased via the amazon.com purchasing system and that I could ship the GL2 to Nigeria. I also would inform the prospective buyer that I would ship the GL2 as soon as I received confirmation from amazon.com confirming the sale of the GL2. Soon after responding I would receive another email  that looked as if it originated from amazon.com, I believe this is called phishing, stating that my camera had been sold and to ship it to some person in Nigeria. Whenever I receive a sale confirmation email from amazon.com I log into my account at amazon.com to verify the legitimacy of the email and each time the camera was still listed as not sold and there was not any money transfered into my amazon.com account. At this point I was certain that the confirmation emails from amazon.com were fraudulent and I was being scammed."

The above photo is from the always excellent 419Eater.

Long promised but never delivered, Tivo is showing early test versions of TivoToGo for Mac OS X at CES. TivoToGo lets you download recordings from Tivo Series 2 and presumably the newly annouced series 3 to your Mac and from there move it to other media devices. "Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry threatened legal action on Monday against comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, who wins laughs by portraying the central Asian state as a country populated by drunks who enjoy cow-punching as a sport.

Baron Cohen, who portrays a spoof Kazakh television presenter Borat in his "Da Ali G Show", has won fame ridiculing Kazakhstan, the world's ninth largest country yet still little known to many in the West."

Beer Container Protocol

So I've been drinking (which I do a lot) and thinking (which I don't do nearly enough) and came up with something amazingly brilliant. But then I forgot it and scribbled down this instead. Like most of the women I sleep with, I am sure I'll regret this tomorrow.

Beer Container Protocol

Keg - Always the preferred container for Gods Gift. The man with a keg controls all. They can even be mobilized thanks to dollies and indentured servants. Bringing your keg out in public will attract moochers nine times out of ten, so be sure to bring lots of bear repellant.

Pitcher - If above mentioned indentured servant is otherwise occupied then this is your next best choice. Don't want to share your pitcher? Damn right you don't, and by drinking directly from the pitcher, no one but the drunkest slob will want to share your Saliva Pale Ale.

Pint Glass - Simple, elegant, and always there for you (unlike your girlfriend, who's always there for ME). In the Beer Protocol, the Pint Glass comes third.

Glass Bottle - Hey at least it's not a can!

Yard Glass - Frat boy novelty. If there's good beer in it, the second foot and a half will be warm and flat by the time you reach it. If there's bad beer in it, then I hope you trip and cut yourself on a yard of glass you schmuck

Beer Hat - Makes up for the use of cans by being considered formal-wear in Kentucky. Two beers at a time means you can get funk draster!

Beer Bong - That sixer of Naughty Ice that some loser brought over isn't gonna drink itself. MGD, Bud, PBR, or any other beer that is only valuable for the liquor content can quickly drown your troubles via a large funnel and 3 feet of smelly rubber tubing from Home Depot.

Beer Can - Consider this simply a momentary container before filling your beer bong. Canned beer tastes bad, is not a usable weapon, and despite what your gay uncle told you, it will not make you forget that time he touched your no-no spot.

Plastic Beer Bottle - What good is a beer container if you can hurt a Major League Baseball player with it?

Beer Goggles - Not a Beer container but something everyone should always be wary of. If she's talking to you and not trying to steal your wallet, then she's ugly.

"BBC Three, one of the public broadcaster's digital TV channels, sent an e-mail to the Bob Marley Foundation saying it wanted to do a documentary about his hit song "No Woman No Cry".

It said the project would involve Marley -- who died of cancer in May 1981 at the age of 36 -- "spending one or two days with us", and that "it would only work with some participation from Bob Marley himself". "

iGetMovies

One of my biggest pet-peeves on the internet is movies or trailers that are view only, and don't let you save them to your drive. There are almost always ways to trick your browser into downloading them, but they take a lot more effort than some cheesy trailer is usually worth. Enter iGetMovies (warning: french website). A free application made in Applescript studio, it copies the movie from quicktime's cache and saves it as a viewable quicktime movie on your desktop. This works for any quicktime movie in Safari or on the iTunes store.

Bless Your iPod

om-mani-padma-hum.gif

"Tibetan Buddhists believe that saying the mantra (prayer) Om Mani Padme Hum, invites the blessings of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion."

Bare with us here, there is a point!

"They also believe you can produce the same effect by spinning the written form of the mantra around in a prayer wheel (called "Mani wheels" by the Tibetans). The effect is said to be multiplied when more copies of the mantra are included, and spinning the Mani wheels faster increases the benefit as well."

Remember "Giiiive me the kniiife" from Eddie Murphy's The Golden Child?

"His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, has said that having the mantra on your computer works the same as a traditional Mani wheel. As the digital image spins around on your hard drive, it sends the peaceful prayer of compassion to all directions and purifies the area."

So just by downloading the above image to your iPod (or hard drive) you can bless it, and all that surrounds it.

All the Buddhist stuff in quotes came from here. Yes, this was sort-of mentioned on slashdot ages ago, but putting it on your iPod is my “spin” on things.

A custom-designed circuit relays bus activity to the LEDs, allowing them to accurately reflect usage of each memory module. In addition, eight blue ground effects LEDs emit a constant glow near the pins. "

Apple's G5 Liquid Cooling System

g5lcs1small.gif

Apple Insider has published detailed illustrations of the liquid cooling system used in Apple's new G5. It looks very similar to the liquid cooling system developed by MIT students (who were sponsored by Apple) if you ask me. Keep in mind this entire system is enclosed in the heatsink.

I cant help but wonder how long untill someone tries to open their heatsink and destroys their new G5. Or some tech at CompUSA who cant even spell Macintosh wants to change out someones radiator fluid for them, only after Pep-Boys refills their car's blinker fluid of course.

"1. G5 processor at point of contact to the heatsink.
2. G5 processor card from IBM
3. Heatsink (also referred to as a 'waterblock')
4. Cooling fluid output from the radiator to the pump
5. Liquid cooling system pump
6. Pump power cable (usually connected to the main logic board, but repositioned in the above diagram)
7. Cooling fluid radiator input from the G5 processor
8. Radiant grille
9. Airflow direction "

A few days ago we mentioned Xlink Kia was coming to the Mac but they still haven’t given a release date (they also refuse to even confirm that it's being worked on in their forums).
Thanks to Aquaduct 2 we dont really have to care:

"* The power to play some Xbox Halo online. Lots and lots of Halo. And 45+ other System Link games too.
* The ability to register an XBConnect Tag and log in to the XBConnect server, where you'll find lots of Windows users who also want to play some Halo. You can use an existing Tag if you have one.
* An Aqua-beautiful browser to list games. Lots and lots of games.
* Live sorting and searching tools to manipulate the games list. 'Cause it's so full.
* A little yellow Connect button, to join in on those games.
* A chat interface, for both the XBConnect chat rooms and your own Aquaduct channel.
* A slightly buggy buddy list to help organize your posse.
* A mostly-complete step-by-step guide to using Aquaduct.
* Stuff I have forgotten Aquaduct does. "

New Ripper in Town

MacTheRipper is a new and free (GPL) DVD extractor for Mac OS X.

"MacTheRipper removes CSS encryption, Macrovision protection, and sets the disc's region code to '0' for region-free by default, and is capable of removing RCE region protection as well, making an unrestricted copy of any DVD movie you own. It doesn't rely on the DVD drive to get the CSS decryption keys, so that means that you do not need to play the DVD with DVD Player in order to rip it to your hard drive unprotected."

I have yet to try it, but having alternatives to DVDBackup and OSEx can only be a good thing. This isn't a compressor/re-encoder so movies larger than 4.3gb still need to go through DVD2One or an equivalent.

2004

Every time I take a vacation something goes wrong. This year I was in the Bahamas celebrating Junkanoo (like Carnival or Mardi Gras for the islands) 24 hours of drinking, debauchery, and general Westside representation.

In case you can't tell, our host was hacked over christmas.
The hackers deleted every site on the host's servers and even somehow got to all of their backups. The last backup I made was 10/12/03 (doh!) and as you can see things are still pretty broken. The only good news is that it gave me the opportunity to upgrade to MoveableType 2.65 which fixes some bugs and adds a couple new features. We will not let the eastside bring us down. This year will be bigger and better than anything seen here before (like that will be hard =).

You can do your part by simply holding it up for the true Westsiders, keepin it real, and sending news tips and stories to BlackFly@capsgetpeeled.com. Lets start 2004 off with a bang bang bang!

The Self Design iPod Body Masks from TechReactions.com allow you to customize the whole look of your iPod and offer a little scratch protection. You design all your own graphics and print them out on the "special" film yourself. If someone with some design talent wants to make me a CapsGetPeeled iPod mask I will buy one for them and one for myself. The template is here.

Somebody is sooooo getting fired in Ohio today.... A local CBS affiliate was in the middle of airing family prime-time programing and cut to a stunning clip of their local news anchor-woman flashing all of Ohio what we hear may be the new state bird. She wasn't repping for the Westside, but it's a gangster move nonetheless!

Motorola Marco

A friend found a Motorola Marco on ebay! This VERY VERY rare PDA was first used internally at all Motorola Facilities starting in 1992. It had Radio Frequency wireless, some early cell phone tech wireless, as well as an IR and DB-15 Port. It runs the newton OS and as far as I can remember was basically a newton with a bigger screen, weighs 2 POUNDS, and the wireless stuff. As a side note, many people have figured out how to get Newton's with PC card slots on 802.11 networks.

Gentoo goes PPC crazy

Gentoo, the new "in" Linux distro, loves us Mac people.

Monday they released Gentoo Live PPC CD - a bootable Linux CD that should work on most modern macs. It features:
*Custom PPC kernel (2.4.21-r1) with G4 AltiVec support
*Latest Mac-On-Linux emulator (run MacOS X in a window)
*Gentoo Compressed Loop 2GB live filesystem
*Xfree 4.3 (DRM) with either Gnome2.2.1/Metacity/Openbox or KDE3.1.2
and more

Then yesterday they announced Mac OS X support for Portage. Portage is a package manager/installer (think Fink) and that means more free software for Mac OS X.

Adios Handspring

In a move that I think isn't good for anyone, Palm has announced it's intentions to acquire Handspring. Palm has been struggling for years and this looks like a last ditch effort. The only hope I see for them at this point is if Sony buys out the Palm OS for exclusive use in the Clie's, but I doubt that will happen due to Sony's new love for Symbian. Handspring made some great products, and Windows CE blows, but lets face it, NOTHING will ever be as cool as Newton was.

He is also doing the mac port of America's Army the free UT 2k3 based Realism Shooter. Support Ryan and MacSoft and buy the damn game.

In other mac game news, Postal 2 is coming to the mac. I LOVED Postal 1. Epsecially with the add-on packs. This new one uses an Unreal engine and so it actually looks decent.

Lazy-Boy Sunday

Tomorrow I get the keys to my first home. I am more excited than I have ever been. I spent most of today looking for couches. I really wanted a reclining one but can't afford it. I think I'm getting this one but I'm not crazy about the color. It doesn't bother me, but black is so much better looking. Shopping sucks and I have no ability to match colors.

Brian helped me fix the sidebar text to be readable, now I have to convince him to fix the rest of this place. I added a BlogSnob and BlogHop section. For some reason my BlogShares Listing is very messed up. It sees only one incoming link when I know of at least 4, and only sees 3 outgoing links. My blogroll has like 20 sites in it! The oddest part is it sees one site in my blogroll and nothing else.

RTFM

I have been playing The Getaway for about two weeks now, and just passed the mansion with the lasers. "Why haven't you finished it?" you ask? Cause I DIDN'T READ THE FUCKING MANUAL. The game has no "training" mode or level so I just jumped in and figured it out by playing. I can't remember any time in my gaming history (easily 400 games) that I have missed out on MAJOR features of game-play due to not reading the manual, but now it's happened.

It turns out there is an Auto-Aim that is meant to be the primary attack but only works when enemies are around, so when you hide in an empty room to learn the controls, it does nothing so you assume it's unused.

And this one bothers me a lot. The game has no health or ammo gauges, and no health to pickup anywhere. I assumed that this meant there was no healing, boy was I wrong. Apparently leaning against walls heals you. Yes, LEANING heals you! WHAT THE FUCK!@#$% I want those magical morphine walls in my new condo!

Speaking of the condo, I get my keys on monday. I am so god damn excited I can't believe it. My first home, it's a ton of responsibility but will absolutely change my life for the better. I still have no roommate and can't afford to be without one. I put an ad in the Loyola-Marymount student paper since it's walking distance to the campus but only got 3 phone calls. First one didn't return my calls. Second forgot to leave his phone number in the message and didn't show up on my caller ID. Number 3 only wanted a summer place, and I don't want to go through this again in 3 months. Also I still haven't figured out hosting, I absolutely cannot get a static IP in the new place and cannot afford any kind of hosting. A few people have emailed me links to their favorite hosts (thanks) but I still cant swing it. Fear not, my dear readers, CapsGetPeeled will never die. The power of the Westside compels it.

Important CGP News

CapsGetPeeled.com is moving around May 10th and will experience some downtime. The server is hosted off my home DSL line and in order to be deeper immersed in the glory of the Westside, I am moving as west as it gets. Unfortunately the new location cannot get DSL and I don't know if the cable provider offers static IP's. I cant really afford professional hosting (even though my traffic is tiny) and half the fun of this site is hosting it myself. So I have to figure something out. Ideas and donations are appreciated.

DVD2ONE Mac OS X a Possibility

According to this post (2nd from the bottom) the developers of DVD2one are looking into making a version for Mac OS X. For those of you who don't know what DVD2one is, It converts DVD9 (dual layer/larger than 4.7gb) to DVD5 (DVD-R/RW). It keeps menus, chapter marks, and subtitles. But the amazing part is that it takes less than an hour! The reason for it's speed is that it cheats, instead of re-encoding the video it deletes parts of the GOP. I have never personally seen a DVD made with DVD2one so i cannot say anything about it's quality, but LOTS of people buy this app so it cant be too bad. Oh wait, lot's of people buy windows too.
-CGP fo Life-

:::UPDATE::: Later in the thread the same DVD2one employee says they have purchased a PowerMac G4 to give it a go. As they have no mac experience this is in no ways a guarantee we will see a mac version, but now there is a very very good chance.

Smelly Clothes, on Purpose.

While we're on the subject of clothes, British scientists have found a way to make clothes with embedded scents! From the site:

"The technology, called Sensory Perception Technologies (SPT), will allow firms to weave particles of moisturisers, deodorants, fragrances and even anti-tobacco agents into fabrics."

iScrobbler Released!

iScrobbler has been released to the public. The iTunes based AudioScrobbler client works very well and looks slick. Here a description stolen straight from the homepage:

"iScrobbler is an application for Mac OS X that creates a simple menu extra that submits your "currently playing" info from iTunes to AudioScrobbler. AudioScrobbler is a project similar to the CDNow project that suggests music you might like based on what other people's interests. The difference is that while CDNow makes suggestions based on what people buy, AudioScrobbler makes suggestions based on what people are actually listening to. Also, AudioScrobbler is a non-commercial project. AudioScrobbler submissions are also possible through a plugin for Winamp2, and XMMS."

Holy new software updates batman!

Apple brings the Duece-Duece
First they give us a new Safari , and then Mac OS X 10.2.4. Stupid update moves and replaces your httpd.conf (Apache Config). If they can write an OS I don't see why they cant figure how to add a line to an existing text file.

Movable Type hits 2.6
The software that runs this blog (and like a million others) MovableType has been updated to version 2.6. There is also a Pro version ($) that might be useful to blogs that actually have readers (unlike here). Arlo Rose returns!

Arlo Rose, one of the two developers that brought us Kaleidoscope for Mac OS 9, has a new product coming out. Konfabulator, set to be released tomorrow, looks pretty amazing.

According to MacOSZone
"Konfabulator is a JavaScript runtime engine for Mac OS X that lets you run little files called Widgets that can do pretty much whatever you want them to. Widgets can be alarm clocks, calculators, can tell you your AirPort signal strength, will fetch the latest stock quotes for your preferred symbols, and even give your current local weather."

Wow! Could this be the next Watson-like "Killer App", or will it be a poor cry for help like Sherlock 3?
