Uno

uno13.png

Make OS X pretty again with Uno:

UNO is a theme that brings the sunken unified toolbar/titlebar look&feel to every single window on your system (cocoa or carbon, metal or aqua and already unified windows as well).

On an higher level, UNO's main goal is to enhance aqua interface consistence, by making all elements look&feel "as one".
UNO is aimed to those who want a clean and un-osbstructive interface while keeping the best of Aqua.

The unity level proposed by UNO does not compromises overall GUI contrast: UNO and UNO shade can be mixed up in order to achieve that usability goal."

And it's free!

Aaron Schwarz (one of the people behind TShirthell.com) wants a new name. Not only does he want you to pick it, he will pay you $25,000 for it!

"My name is Aaron Schwarz and I've decided to change my name. I figured, rather than dealing with the boredom of researching mythological deities or wasting my precious time looking through popular books of names, I would just get the entire population of the world to do the job for me. Oh yeah, I'm going to give $25,000 to whoever suggests the best name."

Why are you still here? You should be suggesting a name!

Gawker Goodness

GAWKER.jpg
Gawker is a really cool open source application for making time-lapse video's with an iSight (or other camera's I assume), but what makes it Capworthy (yes it's a real word, look it up) is the fact that it has Bonjour network support!

"Gawker is an application for Mac OS X that creates time-lapse movies using an iSight camera. Images from your camera can be shared, allowing other users to record your image stream. Streams can also be combined to create a time-lapse movie with two locations side-by-side."

So I just installed it on some coworkers iMac's and MacBook Pro's, then hid the application, and now I am spying on them all from a different side of the building.
So very evil, so very fun.

One Red Paperclip

onered.jpg

One Red Paperclip is so brilliant and retarded at the same time I am amazed I didn't think of it.

"My name is Kyle MacDonald and I am trying to trade one red paperclip for a house. I started with one red paperclip on July 12th, 2005 and I am making a series of trades for bigger or better things. My current item up for trade is one afternoon with Alice Cooper. Do you want to spend one afternoon with Alice Cooper? Pop your offer over to me at (oneredpaperclip@gmail.com) or give me a shout at 310-689-8867. (If you can't get through - please send a text message) You can see the current offers here. I live in Montreal Canada but will go anywhere in the world for the right offer."

So he started with one red paperclip, which he traded for a fish shaped pen. The pen was traded for a door handle which was in turn traded for an old coleman camping stove. The stove was traded for a beatup red generator but that got traded for a keg of beer and a neon sign. The beer and sign combo got him a snowmobile. The snowmobile was traded for a trip to someplace called Yahk which was (smartly) traded for a moving van. The van got traded up for a recording contract which was turned into a year without rent in Phoenix. And finally, that year in phoenix was traded for a day with Alice Cooper. Just damn cool.

High School band plays Endtroducing...

publicworks.jpg

This video of a high school percussion band playing songs from DJ Shadow's Endtroducing.. is incredible. From the composer's website:

"In the Winter and Spring of 2005, I started the Shadow Percussion Project, where I attempted to adapt a few tracks off DJ Shadow's remarkable album Endtroducing for a live performance group. By mid-February I had arranged both Building Steam with a Grain of Salt and Changeling for Percussion Quintet. Eager to hear what these arrangements sounded like, I brought the music to the Minnetonka High School Percussion Ensemble, an extracurricular music program that I instruct. The students responded to the music positively, even though it was extremely challenging. After a few months of intense rehearsal, the students performed both tracks for a live audience on Monday, May 16 2005. The following video contains the final performance."

In other semi-related news, I recieved my Public Works package today. The only delemma is "Do I wear the shirts or try and save them??" But I know, no matter how hard I try and save them, I will end up wearing them all. Maybe I'll post some photo's of the unboxing if anyone cares.

Teleport Rules

I know I say this about a new application every month, but Teleport is my new favorite application for Mac OS X.
If you use more than one mac at a time, and each have their own monitors, this application lets you share a single keyboard and mouse between the two (or more) computers. Way cooler than any KVM switch and you can use it with your laptops. Their description:

" teleport is a simple utility to let you use one single mouse and keyboard to control several of your Macs. Works on Panther and Tiger (sorry, no more Jaguar support). Simply reach the edge of your screen, and your mouse teleports to your other Mac! The pasteboard can even be synchronized between the computers."

Back in ancient times, before the likes of electricity and the wheel, people played music on these things called records. CoverFlow brings back the experience of digging through your LP's and finding the one you want by it's album art. There appears to be some troubles with it expiring soon (or already maybe?), but hopefully that will be cleared up soon.

Reader Submission Contest

Besk one is back bitches!! After getting robbed by some punk ass tricks and trick ass marks - I've begun replacing all the booty that got snatched from my pad.

Fresh out of the box, I'm posting from my new PowerMac G5 Dual 2.7Ghz, with two 250GB SATA Hard Drives, 2.5GB Ram, and a shiny new 23" Cinema HD Display! (yes I'm now shit-ass poor, and yes I had to finance half, but hell... that's what credits for right???)

So here's the contest, since I lost all of my data, and all of my apps that were on the system that got nicked, I need suggestions for cool apps, utilities, widgets, desktop accessories etc... to populate what is at the moment a tragically baren wasteland of hard drives, lusting for creamy nuggets of digital wonderment and content galore.

Leave your suggestions in the comments, and I'll pick my fav - the winner will get - well probably nothing, and possibly just a rant from me pointing out your shortcomings as a man/your mothers weight/or some other rude and/or crass comment - but it'll be fun, you know you like it!

No seriously, the winner will get a front page entry on CapsGetPeeled.com with me doing a full review on the winning app, and giving you your 5 minutes of glorious westside representation :)

Peace bitches!

And the Schnozberries taste like Schnozberries!!!

schnozberrys.jpg

Artist Alex Schweder has created some Scratch-and-sniff Wallpaper

"Still-life of Beefsteak and Cheese, 2004
Paper, Ink, & Scented Varnish; Each sheet 34" x 21.5"
This line of wallpaper explores color and scent in relation to their construction of a "succulent" space. Set up as three sheets with the same striped pattern, different ratios of scented scratch n?sniff varnishes and colored inks allow a room to be more or less visually or olfactoraly intense but evenly delicious. The name of the wallpaper sets up an expectation of savory flavors in the color while the scent of donuts evokes an unseen sweetness."

It's called Beefsteak and Cheese, but it smells like donuts??? This is one step closer to Willy Wonka's lickable wallpaper!

The Ultimate Beer Bong

DSCN6045.jpg

Not many Beer Bongs have their own domain, and usually for good reason, but this multi-stage, multi-person, compressed air powered Beer Bong truely deserves it's name: The Ultimate Beer Bong.

"My good friend, Billy Holder, and I created what we called 'The Device' some time ago. It was a successful over complication of a beer delivery funnel, also known as a 'beer bong'. Sadly Billy moved out, and there was a deep loss felt from 'The Device' and such the incarnation of 'The Device 2.0¨'. This was to be the biggest, most over complicated, most over engineered beer bong ever created. In fact it was to be such a spectacle it was to have it's own documentry website, and thus you have read this, and it has been done.

The basic idea, simultaneously tap two beer sources being either a sankey Keg, or a 5-gallon party ball, push it with a replenishing air compressor to either a faucet, or up to a 4-gallon upper holding tank with four hoses leading off into four mouths racing to finish their hose.
Specs:
Media type: Keg / Partyball / Water / Air
PSI: Tank-120/First drop-30/BeerSwitch drop-12-14
Upper Tank: 4-gallon capacity with hoses / Activly intercooled via radiator and refidgerator based resevoir.
BeerSwitch: Able to redirect water, air, or beer from two sources into two faucets, up to the main tank, or all three at the same time. "

The US food and Drug Administration has given approval for giving US soldiers MDMA (the physcoactive ingredient in ecstacy) to treat post-traumatic stress disorder

"Scientists behind the trial in South Carolina think the feelings of emotional closeness reported by those taking the drug could help the soldiers talk about their experiences to therapists. Several victims of rape and sexual abuse with post-traumatic stress disorder, for whom existing treatments are ineffective, have been given MDMA since the research began last year."

But we can give out a registration code that anybody is welcome to use.

So here's the deal. Get a copy of Watson from a friend, or look for it somewhere on the Internet, as Karelia can't provide it directly......... Then launch it and choose "Register Watson..." under the "Watson" menu.
* Enter your name and (optionally) your organization.
* In the E-mail address field, enter:

DIY Final Scratch??

spinalcat.jpg
For his graduate thesis from the MIT MediaLab this guy used 2 CueCats (those free barcode readers from RadioShack), 2 Technics 1200's, and some homemade electronics to build his own homebrew version of FinalScratch.

"These pages document my final (graduate thesis) project at the Media Laboratory. The five month-long project concentrated on the development of a hardware/software interface for controlling musical events on a computer using a set of disk-jockey turntables and paper ‘records’ that can be printed or drawn. These records contain visual markings representing programming information for synthesis and/or sequencing of music, which is optically interpreted by a plug-in cartridge (aka spinal cat) for the turntable tonearm. The cartridge then communicates with software on a host computer via MIDI or serial protocols."

Check out the cool photo's or read the Thesis for yourself.

Metal Slug 3D

mslug3d.jpg

Metal Slug, the greatest 2D game ever made, is making the transition to 3d. Announced at the Tokyo Game Show friday, it's only been announced for Japan and for the PS2.

From the Gamespot article:
"It's safe to say that this installment in the Metal Slug series is very early in development. With that caveat, the version being shown on video has some pretty low-quality textures and only rudimentary animation at this point. The gameplay also seems very basic, with the only on-screen indicators being a life meter (so it's safe to assume that you'll be able to take more than one hit before dying, unlike most other Metal Slug games), ammo and grenade counters, and a basic radar display that shows off enemy locations. "

Hopefully it will keep the Metal Slug magic that stole thousands of my quarters over the years.

Homemade Flamethrower

fireupbackyard1.jpg

Answering the age old question of: What happens when you mix a bored geek, $100 worth of PVC from HomeDepot, and a can of denatured alcohol? A homemade flamethrower of course!

"Like any red-blooded, masculine man of the male gender, I love PVC weaponry. You should too. If the concept of heading on down to the local Home Depot and transforming $100 worth of random pipe bits into a killing machine doesn’t appeal to you, you’re a goddamn pansy. iPod in your BMW

step206212004.gif

Apple announced their not-so-secret BMW partnership today.

"Connect with music like never before behind the wheel of your BMW 3 Series, and X3 and X5 SAV, Z4 Roadster or MINI. With the installation of an integrated adapter developed by Apple and BMW, you can now control your iPod or iPod mini through the existing audio system and multi-function steering wheel. Which means no loss of power. No loss of sound quality. No loss of control.
The BMW iPod adapter can be installed in 2002 or later 3 Series, X3 and X5 SAVs, Z4 Roadsters and MINIs with compatible audio configurations."

If any of you rich people out there want to send me an M3 to test this with I would be willing to try this out, but only for the good of our readers of course.

Fix your Hymn

itunes46_hymn_fix.jpg

The latest version of Hymn still decypts your iTunes music, but leaves your personal info to discurage file sharing. iTunes 4.6 however, recognizes these songs as decrypted and refuses to play them.

Gizmodo to the rescue:

"Luckily, there's a way around it if you're handy with a hex editor (thanks to Slashdot user Otto for this; I don't want to imply I thought this up myself, although it is stupidly easy). Search for the string 'geID' in your file -- it might be something similar, but different, but the screenshot shows roughly were it should be. Change that to something else (I used 'heID') and save the file. Voila, your music is free again and you've just broken any number of federal statutes. Welcome to the club. You were probably already a member."

Defamer is reporting a Hollywood Reporter story that Dave Chappelle may be playing Rick James in an upcoming biography movie:

"Lorenzo Di Bonaventura is in negotiations to acquire the film rights to Rick James' autobiography, "Memoirs of a Super Freak," with David Chappelle in early talks to topline the feature film adaptation of the funk rocker's memoirs for Paramount Pictures. James, best known for his hit "Super Freak," has been working on a book for some time."

Shiira

shiiraIcon2.jpg

Safari is a great browser, and by far the best on the mac, but it's not perfect. Thankfully Apple released the internal rendering engine for anyone to write their own browser interface around, and Shiira is just that. An open-source project based in Japan, Shiira is still playing catch-up with Safari but has a very bright future ahead.
Here is the current feature list:

"*Tabbed windows
* Bookmark management
* Sharing bookmarks with Safari
* Side drawer showing bookmarks and history
* Bookmarks toolbar
* Search field with choice of search engine
* Customizing toolbar
* Cache control panel
* Window appearance switching (Aqua and Metal)
* Toolbar icons switching
* Removing Cookie and cache at the termination
* Displaying favicon list
* Enable/disable favicon with bookmark
* Help document (Japanese only)
* Multiple source windows per one browser window
* Displaying HTTP header in source window
* Wheel button operation (open in new tab, and tab switching)
* Auto-tab for bookmark folder
* Displaying back-forward list on toolbar buttons
* Search text field for bookmark and history"

Keep in mind that since it is based on Apple's WebKit it renders everything just as pretty and quickly as Safari does. The name is Japanese for Dolphin Fish (Mahi Mahi).

Family Guy in Pre-Production

Alex Borstein, who plays the voice of Lois on the soon to return television show The Family Guy, has updated her website with some great news for Family Guy fans:

"Well, after my first week back at Family Guy I can say that we are going to deliver some funny freakin' stuff. It's a great group of writers with still more to start in the next coming weeks.

We will be very busy in the next few months getting the new story ideas together and then writing them. In late May we will start to record the new shows. "

In some bad news, rumors reporting that Futurama might return are unfounded as the production team no longer wishes to work together and production costs for the show are much higher than most other animation shows.

iEatBrainz

iEatBrainz is a MusicBrainz.org client that works directly with your iTunes library. WTF am I talking about?? Basically it makes an acoustic signature of a song and compares that with a database online to help you correct all your ID3 tags on your MP3's and AAC's. I ran about 2000 mp3s through it that had either bad, incomplete, or no tags at all. 1500 came back fixed correctly! After you verify the tags the app will apply the changes directly to iTunes. The bad news is this app crashes, A LOT. I've been told the developer is adding better error handling, but dont do too many songs at once, because after it crashes you will have to do them again. All in all it has tons of potential and still works damn well when it's not crashing.

3 - Equipment Terminal Buildings - 4 Stories
3 - Misc. Buildings adjacent to Silos
Ex-Air Intake Building (Empty Useable Space)
Ex-Air Exhaust Building (Empty Useable Space)

The PC version of the game is being written specifically for AMD's new 64 bit processor, and Ryan Gordon (the man behind UT2003 for mac) was even demoing the 64-bit version at AMD's launch event. It's pretty safe to assume this game will kick ass especially on the G5.

Evade the RIAA

The RIAA has revealed that one of the ways they are tracking fileswappers is by the file's MD5 checksum. This pretty dumb on their part since making any changes to the mp3 changes the files MD5. This means if you add one letter or number anywhere in the ID3 tag of the MP3 it's no longer in the RIAA database. All you have to do is add something to the comments field of all your MP3's and the RIAA wont be able to use MD5's to prove you stole the music, just the 30gb's of bandwith you use every month =).

Interesting G5 Notes

I know it's the holiday weekend but no one seemed to notice some really big things in the recently released PowerMac G5 Dev Note on Apple's website.

g5 spec 1
(From Page 16, Figure 1-2)
The G5 has external Airport and Bluetooth antenna ports! I have not seen this mentioned anywhere else before.

g5 spec 1
(From Page 25, Chapter 2)
Ram MUST be installed in pairs of the same size! My guess this is due to the fact that the ram is 64-bit but the memory bus is 128-bit, and therefor accesses 2 banks of memory at a time much like a RAID array does with hard drives. This is common in workstations and mainframes, and I am sure others have noticed this when trying to do a G5 BTO at Apple's online store.

g5 spec 1
(From Page 26, Chapter 2)
This means everyone who was hoping to keep using their old 4x AGP card is out of luck.

g5 spec 4
(From Page 27, Chapter 2)
No big surprise, these cards are rare and wouldn't fit in most modern computers.

Found anything I missed? Comment below.

RTFM

I have been playing The Getaway for about two weeks now, and just passed the mansion with the lasers. "Why haven't you finished it?" you ask? Cause I DIDN'T READ THE FUCKING MANUAL. The game has no "training" mode or level so I just jumped in and figured it out by playing. I can't remember any time in my gaming history (easily 400 games) that I have missed out on MAJOR features of game-play due to not reading the manual, but now it's happened.

It turns out there is an Auto-Aim that is meant to be the primary attack but only works when enemies are around, so when you hide in an empty room to learn the controls, it does nothing so you assume it's unused.

And this one bothers me a lot. The game has no health or ammo gauges, and no health to pickup anywhere. I assumed that this meant there was no healing, boy was I wrong. Apparently leaning against walls heals you. Yes, LEANING heals you! WHAT THE FUCK!@#$% I want those magical morphine walls in my new condo!

Speaking of the condo, I get my keys on monday. I am so god damn excited I can't believe it. My first home, it's a ton of responsibility but will absolutely change my life for the better. I still have no roommate and can't afford to be without one. I put an ad in the Loyola-Marymount student paper since it's walking distance to the campus but only got 3 phone calls. First one didn't return my calls. Second forgot to leave his phone number in the message and didn't show up on my caller ID. Number 3 only wanted a summer place, and I don't want to go through this again in 3 months. Also I still haven't figured out hosting, I absolutely cannot get a static IP in the new place and cannot afford any kind of hosting. A few people have emailed me links to their favorite hosts (thanks) but I still cant swing it. Fear not, my dear readers, CapsGetPeeled will never die. The power of the Westside compels it.

May Day Project

the May Day Project - Your Day In Photos sounds pretty cool to me. On May 10th everyone involved will take photos about every hour for 24 hours. If I had a digital camera I would show life on the westside, but I am broke from buying my new home.

Kazaa for Mac Scam

This WebExpo forum post talks about http://www.kazaa-file-sharing-downloads.com stealing iSwipe and SELLING it as Kazaa for Mac. This is hilarious for 2 reasons. First off iSwipe is awful. It really really blows. It finds nothing, barely downloads, and crashes a ton, but it's free. Second, all the complainers and forum post's are on forums frequented by and focused for Warez. These are thieves complaining about someone stealing.

2003 MDD G4s have USB 2

According to this korean article Apple's 2003 MDD G4 Dual 1.25ghz and 1.42ghz use a USB 2.0 controller. It's very possible it was cheaper than a 1.0 controller or maybe no one makes 1.0 controllers in mass anymore. Apple may not ever make a driver to enable USB 2 but the machine has the ability.

BlogShares is a fantasy stock market for weblogs. Players get to invest a fictional $500, and blogs are valued by inbound links. CapsGetPeeled is now listed here. Since we rarely get linked to expect the price to be cheap, I mean really really "Crazy Gideon" cheap.

It aint my Fault

National Geographic says I live on a huge fault.
"Known as the Puente Hills Blind Thrust System, the fault is three to 17 kilometers (2 to 11 miles) deep and extends for almost 50 kilometers (31 miles) from northern Orange County, through Los Angeles, up to Beverly Hills. "
My mom was right when she said "The crack is gonna kill you"

Magnetic Inductive Power Transfer Mat

/. has a story about a mat that charges portable devices through magnetic induction. Splashpower's mat claims to charge palm-type devices, cell phones, and even some laptops. This could be very very sweet if it just work with todays technology.

BroadQ Q-Cast Tuner

I won a free PS2 but I already have an X-Box and a ton of games for it and am pretty happy. I picked up Grand Theft Auto Vice City and Gran Tourismo 3, but lets face it the XBox has much much better graphics, Surround sound in games, and lets me pick my own music for many games. I started thinking about selling it when I decided to buy the Q-Cast Tuner from Broadq. It plays Divx, MPEG 1/2/4, MP3's, OGG and more. A Server app goes on your computer. It's a Java app that runs under Mac OS X (and 2 other OS's, but who cares about them) and a boot CD for the PS2. I will post an in-depth review once i really sit down and play with it, but so far it looks like we have a keeper!

Album Cover Wonderland

I love my MP3's but damn do I miss my album cover art. I never realized it until I found Jacket and Playalong. Both show album covers to whatever is playing in iTunes but the similarity ends there.

Jacket is an iTunes plug-in that shows your album covers full screen, but you have to add the jpegs manually. This ensures you get the right image, or can customize it for Mixes or live sets. This can take many days if you have a couple hundred albums.

Playalong is a floating window that shows a 1/2 inch square album cover but Automagically? finds the covers off Amazon for you. The problems with this, besides the fact that I despise floating windows, is when it's wrong you cant change it, it has no caching so it downloads the jpeg EVERY time, and 1/2 is just too small to actually enjoy the art.

If only Jacket kept it's customizability and added Playalong's auto-search I would be a very happy Cap Peeler.

Switch for the Porn, Part 2

The previous link to the Dave Chappelle Apple switch parody generated a lot of traffic and a ton of emails. Many complained about the RealVideo and everyone complained about bandwidth. Thanks to Halfie we now have a nice Quicktime 6 MPEG 4 version. And thanks to .Mac it's also on a fast server (unlike here).

The PBZone has basically gone out of it's way to get an Apple Store employee fired.
I agree with the second story that PBZone showed no responsibility in what they did, even going so far as to list his name and address!!

Forty-Two to be updated soon

According to this post Forty-Two (remember this?) is set to be updated very soon.
"forty-two no longer uses the term. We have implemented our threaded slave app, threadSlave to control the engines and status updates. It has been re-coded, along with the core engines, not to suck up too much cpu from the encoders."
And the AC3 problem is fixed as well.
